I'm no expert and I've not looked through their site fully only at this page, so maybe some things they explain elsewhere...
Your linked PC doesn't mention the exact motherboard it's using (just Asus) which is important to know so you can be aware of how much it can be upgraded in the future. It also has a 450W power supply which may well be sufficient but perhaps it's best to go for more power in case you plan to upgrade with power-eating components one day and are pushing the PC for video editing work etc. You also don't know which monitor you would get so that would be important to know.
I just had a quick look on a site called goldenelectronics.co.uk - I cannot recommend them as I have never used them, but you can configure a base system so I've just done that.
I configured this base model (http://www.goldenelectronics-online.co.uk/eshop/index.php?app=gbu&ns=prodshow&ref=GL1001) to this spec with the newer/faster/stable Core 2 Duo Processor in there, the RAM you want and, I believe, a better video card(?):
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (2 x 2.13Ghz)
Gigabyte 965P-S3 Motherboard (Supports up to 8GB RAM)
Thermaltake Soprano Case with 550W EZCool PSU
2GB DDR2 667mhz RAM
250GB S-ATA2 3.0Gb/s Hard drive
18x Double-Layer DVD+/-RW
NVidia GeForce 7600GT PCI-E 256MB
Vista Home Premium
Onboard Sound (might be good enough if it's a higher end mobo?)
Onboard 10/100 network card
Keyboard, mouse and speakers,
3 Years Standard Warranty
= £612.95 inc VAT.
And this base model (http://www.goldenelectronics-online.co.uk/eshop/index.php?app=gbu&ns=prodshow&ref=BL0901) to this spec:
Pentium D 945 (2 x 3.4Ghz)
2GB DDR2 533mhz RAM
Asus P5VD2-MX Motherboard (think it supports up to 4GB of RAM)
250GB S-ATA2 3.0Gb/s Hard drive
18x Double-Layer DVD+/-RW
NVidia GeForce 7600GT PCI-E 256MB
Vista Home Premium
Onboard Sound (might be good enough if it's a higher end mobo?)
Onboard 10/100 network card
Keyboard, mouse and speakers,
3 Years Standard Warranty
(It doesn't say the PSU amount though)
= £502.95 inc VAT
I left some money from your budget for the monitor - whether you know exactly what you need from a monitor, I don't know. I can only recommend the one I use which is good for the budget - 19" HannsG (HW191D) which is currently on overclockers.co.uk (where I bought the monitor from) at £115.14 and comes with a 3-year on-site warranty from the manufacturer. It was recently advertised at £111 delivered on Amazon although they've now put the price back up to £134 I believe - you can read all the good comments about the monitor here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=380452
So I hope that has been of some help - as I say, I'm no expert and I can't vouch for any particular company, although I have used overclockers twice with no problems, but never the goldenelectronics people. Obviously, the standard applies, investigate further if you think anything appeals to you before spending your money, use ciao or search for reviews of them online to see if they've got good reps. I think my main advice is to spend wisely on the core components of the PC as there's no point having a top graphic card if you've not got the power for it or your mobo won't take more than 2GB/4GB of RAM etc. Also have to consider if you want better sound, firewire etc... I think both those options had 6USB ports if you check.
Good luck with your new PC anyway!0 -
Just to follow up, a helpful poster in the monitor thread I linked to has pointed out that it's selling at £111.62 with £6 delivery http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=446N
and another poster has linked to another 19" widescreen from the manufacturer selling for £99 delivered from play.com (which I thoroughly recommend as a site!): http://play.com/PC/PCs/STTS9/3-/3275268/Videoseven_V7_L19WA_19_Flat_Panel_Widescreen_Monitor/Product.html0 -
The Pentium D is FAR slower than most Core2duo processors. The Core2duo also consumes considerably less power and produces less heat as a result too!0
