Anyone having trouble buying ingredients?

Evening all :hello:

I went shopping yesterday to Asda, going about the shop I noticed there seems to be lots more convenience foods than normal.I went to the baking section to stock up,but couldn't find dessicated coconut  I asked an assistant, who didn't know what it was  she then got 2 more assistants, much older ;) they hunted then checked with management,Asda have stopped coconut  the reason 'people don't cook anymore' I was gobsmacked, but after much protesting they will start selling it again in a couple of months.
I carried on shopping, couldn't get popping corn, only ready done, this is the highlight of my children's weekend, popping corn in the pan :D I couldn't get any celeriac or mangoes, they are stopping the exotic fruits, only now selling pre packed ready to eat in tub???
What's going on? I try to cut back on packaging and we eat everything freshly cooked, but where will this end? soon we will be forced into convenience food
Anyone else finding this?
Sorry for the moan :D

I went in Asda the other week having not shopped there for a couple of years and noticed how much the range of ingredients had shrunk. I'm lucky where I live is very ethnically mixed and you can get nearly anything you could possibly want in the independent local shops. The only other place I go for food is the local Aldi.

Its scary isn't it. This is so in the supermarkets favour as there probably very little profit in basic foods compared to junk food. There are no independant food stores left near us just huge supermarkets, if they gradually keep reducing their ranges what hope is there for the British diet?

    I agree, it is scary.

My local Asda is still doing exotic fruits in the fruit and veg section and I can still get dessicated coconut, but if they do reduce their range to mainly convenience foods then I think I'll just vote with my feet.

No,wouldn't have a clue where the nearest Waitrose is,certainly none in this neck of the woods,we are really limited here,as zippy says,so many local shops are closing, the supermarkets are taking over and 'choosing' our diets, wouldn't be as bad if we didn't only have 2 supermarkets

Any weigh and save/food weighhouse nearby ? I got my last lot from there. I have ended up ordering some things off the internet recently, especially spices etc. Amazing how many convenience foods there are now. Ready made everything I think.
One day I might be more organised...........

This is another step for supermarkets to monopolise the food supply. Get the customer used to consuming profitable, poor quality ready meals. The artificial taste is addictive and soon they have an entire population stuffing the tills with dosh.

Good for those who complain and won't let up. :T

Here in London there are plenty of places where to get ingredients for cooking from scratch, and that's where I go to do most of my shopping.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
