IPad and IPod Not Syncing

I have just got the IPad 3 and it is not syncing with ITunes. Also my older IPod Touch is not now syncing; it used to be OK with an older version of ITunes.

The desktop PC is fairly new running Windows 7 and I have installed(twice)the latest version of I Tunes(10.6.1)(even after uninstalling)

I Tunes usually recognises both devices, and attempts to sync; however then there are a variety of different symptoms. Occasionally it doesn’t even recognise either device.

Sometimes I Tunes freezes and has to be closed down withTask manager. Other times after several minutes trying to Sync it states there is a with the PC.

The ITunes diagnostic procedure again gives varying responses – from ‘device not detected’ to everything OK.

I Cloud is also not working – although that could be ‘finger trouble’ as indeed could the non-syncing problem.

I have just loaded, for the first time, the same version of I Tunes on my ancient laptop running XP and the IPod touch syncs OK. – not ye ttried IPad.

Anyone any ideas please?

Sorry if you've already tried these steps:
This cures a lot of iPad/iPod/iPhone problems:
    - close all apps that are open in the background
    - turn off (not just put on standby) then turn on again

Turn the PC off then on again too. Uninstall iTunes. Reinstall iTunes (from a new download).
Make sure the PC is just running iTunes, it's quite resource-intensive. Maybe it is running out of memory, which might cause it to freeze? How much memory does the PC have?
    Turn off auto-sync.
Plug in iPad, and see what happens.
If iTunes doesn't see the iPad:
    - try another cable.
    - blow dust out of USB slot and slot on iPad.
    - try another USB slot.

What data are you trying to sync to the iPad?

Researching this on the internet, iTunes freezing appears to be a common problem and no 'one size fits all' solution.

In my case I found that the latest version of iTunes(10.6.1) installs with compatibility set for Win XP. The solution for me appears to be setting this compatibility to Win7 and it all works - and explains why it worked on my old laptop.
