Refunding to my credit card when the balance is zero? (what happens?)

Could anyone give me advice on this? Hope this is simple and i've just been too silly to find it on here :D

I'm looking to get something that I paid for by credit card refunded.... but the balance on my credit card by the time it is returned is likely to be £0 (I need to make a balance transfer soon)

In this case, what would happen? Would it be kept on my card as credit for future purchases? Or the money returned to the bank where my direct debit is set up?

Thanks!
