Hanging and Supplying 5 Interior Doors

Hi there

I'm looking to replace 5 interior doors in my house, 3 moulded doors, 1 Fire Door and a Glazed Door.

I thought about getting someone in basically do everything ie supply and fit them. I've received a quote for £990 from a local firm. This includes the supplying of the doors, handles, latches, hinges as well as them painting them, and disposing of the old doors.

It seems a bit steep to me but this is my first house and haven't done anything like this before but on the assumption that I get someone in to do everything, then should I look elsewhere?

Is there VAT in that?

If so, you would be better off getting an indpendent carpenter to do the job for you. Many have smaller turnovers and therefore aren't registered for VAT. You may have to go with the carpenter to get the doors and pay for them, but it could save you some money.

Its very easy to say 'Oh that should only take x amount of time", but unless we have seen the job, its difficult to say.

Some doors will be done very quickly, but if the frames are out, then it can take a while just hanging one door. Additionally, a fire door will have to have intimescent strips routed in a nd a perco/close set, which all adds to the time.

Also, it depends on the type of hardware specified. There is a great variation on prices so it depends whether he has gone for value for money or top end.

It would be worth getting additional quotes.

If you can post links to the exact doors then you would get accurate quotes.Fire doors,glazed doors etc can cost anything from £30-00 o £300-00....A good quality latch is about £6-00 cheap one £2-00, decent handles £20-00+ cheap rubbish £5-99..

Personally I would charge a days labour (£185-00+vat)plus materials.

It wouldn't take a whole day but there wouldn't be enough time to go and fit another job in...

I would agree with all that although if I was pricing I would allow a day abnd half simply because FDs can often take longer than anticipated.

Hanging them can and if the OP posts links to the doors we can work out what should be left for painting.

It's possible to hang 'em I'd say.
But impossible to say whether the quote's accurate without knowing the doors etc as above.
