Car insurance, name question

Hi all,

My name is Becky and I am only ever called Becky but the name on my birth certificate is Rebecca. When completing my car insurance online I put my name in as Becky, as I do with everything (my no claims bonus proof is in the name off Becky from my last insurance company too). When the documents came through it dawned on me; should I be using Rebecca for this?

The insurance company want a £20 admin fee for changing the name so I'd rather leave it if I don't have to change it.

Thanks

leave it, if you change it to Rebecca then odds on some eagle eyed call centre operative will disallow your NCB because that's not in the same name
  • What name is your driving license in? Surely they should be the same?

    Driving license is Rebecca.

The only relevant information I can find online is about incorrectly spelt names, apparently your insurance is still valid if your name is spelt incorrectly.

    No.

OP, just leave it as it is and save £20. There will be no problems in the event of a claim.

If you're stopped by the police the insurance database will show Becky as being insured, but your name as recorded on your driving licence is Rebecca.

Whether your car gets seized in those circumstances depends on whether the police officer believe that the two names are the same person, but it would cost hundreds in recovery and storage fees if it is seized.

You would probably have to get a new certificate with your birth name on it before you could retrieve your car, and persuade your insurers to confirm to the police that the certificate covering "Becky" actually meant Rebecca, in order to prevent a conviction for no insurance.

    Is it worth that risk?
