"protected" no claims?!

Can anyone help?
My car insurance is due for renewal and I'm confused by the protection of no claims.
I previously have 7 years protected no clas but had an accident in January. My car insurance renewal has come through and still says 7 years no claims.
I rang my insurer and the first assistant said it should still have gone up to 8 years even with my claim, then a second assistant said it doesn't.
I have then received another copy of the renewal in the post but still says 7 years?
Thanks for your help.

You only get awarded a year's NCD if you don't make any claims during that year.

Your protection only covers the years you had at the start of the policy!

You had an accident, you don't lose anything but you don't gain anything either otherwise they'd be rewarding you for having an accident?
  • Brill thank you... I was more confused by 2 different responses from my own insurance provider.

As has been mentioned, the advisor made a mistake by stating you would get a years no claims. You made a claim so unable to get an extra year no claims. What it does is protect your existing no claims, so you still have 7 years instead of dropping down to 5 or 4 years.
  • Thanks everyone. Makes much more sense now.

Dropping down to 3 you mean.

An Insurer could offer NCD up to 99 years (just as an example) but for the purpose of a claim will always base it on 1-5.
