Dog soft poos

As is says in the title - how do I stop ??
Atm she is fed a mix of winalot tins mixed with dry. She won't eat the dry on it's own.
I am moving her onto raw in two weeks time but can't do it just now due to personal circumstances (my grandfather passed away on Wed so haven't had time to go to the suppliers).

Winalot isn't a very good quality food. What dry food is she fed on?
If you want a better quality wet food to add to her food then pick up some Naturediet or some Wainwrights trays at PAH. Much better quality - you can even microwave it to make it smell a bit more appealing. I used to add half a tray to my GSD's meal and then slowly decreased this - eventually she was happy with just a forkful or two mixed in to her biscuits. After a while, I could even feed her the dry biscuits without it but those 2 forkfuls really increased her enthusiasm without too much expense so I just continued to add it.
Lower quality foods are bulked out with poorly digested ingredients which pass right through - resulting in bulky and soft poos. The more digestible a food is, the firmer and smaller the poos tend to be.0 -
I am only using it as I bought a large tray enough to last us two weeks s, I had planned on starting raw this week but others things came up. I might get a chance to nip to pets at home but not really sure. No point in home delivery as we wont be at home for a while ( don't worry, dog comes out with us )
The poos haven't been soft all along though, just the past few days/week for some reason. She did look the previous week as if she was a bit constipated when doing a poo.0 -
As she's a newly acquired rescue dog, this could be more down to nerves than the food.
Maybe a couple of days of eggy rice, or boiled chicken could get her tum back to normal.0 -
Scrambled eggs usually help to bind them up. I do 2 in a cup with 2 tablespoons of water whacked together. Cook in Microwave for 2 minutes, stir and if not fully cooked do for 30 seconds and check again. Allow to cool before giving to dog.
Chicken and rice is good for upset tummies too.:j Proud Member of Mike's Mob :j0 -
Just wanted to add that yes, chicken and rice is great for upset tummies.
Hope your dog feels better soon.

It could just be taking her some time to settle in to her diet.
Are they runny poos or just soft?0 -
Con (((hugs))) - so sorry to hear your sad news xx
Great advice already given and I'd certainly recommend chicken & rice (maybe with a handful of kibble mixed in) for a couple of days.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

If you are planning to start raw in a few weeks I would suggest you start it now with a trip to the supermarket and start introducing things like chicken wings which can be given at one meal and the tinned food you have at another meal.
IMO there is no point in buying a different type of food if you are planning to change to raw in a couple of weeks.
If the poos are soft rather than very loose dire-rear it isn't going to be a problem to do a gradual introduction of raw from the supermarket until you get to the supplierIf you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
Thanks everyone, she has been better today so not sure what it was, will keep an eye.
I won't get to the supermarket this week so starting raw will have to wait, have other things to deal with atm.0 -
I have three adult terriers and (at the moment) two 10 week old terriers. They have ALWAYS had poo problems. It's just never been "pick-up-able" if you see what I mean, so collecting after them has always caused more mess than the original deposit!!
As I mentioned on another thread, I started Raw feeding last week (even the two little puppies) and the change is staggering.
Not only has the QUANTITY of poo reduced by half, they are producing small, hard pellets, which I understand is of benefit to the anal glands. (Basically, a dog passing soft gloop, because he's fed on commercial dog food with loads of grain and fillers, will never get the opportunity to empty his anal glands. They get engorged and either your vet has to empty them (ensure you stay upwind in the clinic when this is happening... :rotfl:) or the dog will scoot his bum across the ground to try the DIY version!)
There is no need to do a slow intro to raw or anything, just swap straight away! It's a little more time consuming to begin with because you just have to learn new ways of doing stuff, but it soon evens out and your hound will definitely thank you for it.
You can either DIY or use a company that sources and pre-packs the ingredients for you. I have used a company for the first month, but plan on buying a 2nd hand mincer and DIY-ing for next month. Best thing is to read, read, read all about it. PM me if you like and I'll forward details of a SUPERB company (I've already given their name out once and I don't want anyone thinking I'm promoting them at all!) who have tonnes of useful info.
Honestly, I was dead sceptical when it was mentioned to me and am already totally converted...:A0
