What do you mean you "asked o2"? You just change the settings on the router yourself.

Probably an antivirus issue which has a high firewall setting. Which one do you have?

For now, try resetting your TCP/IP settings via the Command prompt:

    ipconfig /flushdns
    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
    netsh winsock reset

You will need to reboot your PC after you do that

If the above doesn't resolve it, then try resetting your firewall by turning it off.

Network, file and password protected sharing are all to do with communication between PC/devices on your home network, and nothing to do with accessing the internet.

Could you be more specific when you say "Internet icon showing signal but system will not log on to any browser." What exactly is (or is not) happening? Please give the EXACT wording of any error messages.

Does the connectivity of the Vista laptop improve if you move it next to the router?

  • Can you see the router ( 192.168.1.1 or similar) ?

Try this on another laptop first.

If not has the WPA key been entered correctly ?

Does the WiFi driver support WPA (just a question I have some old devices that only do WEP) ?

Another thing is to try (from start menu)

    Run

    cmd

ipconfig (type this in the black box you get when you run cmd )

If the IP address starts 169 you didn't get an IP address from the router.

This should fix with a "repair" of the connection.

The 169.x.x.x address is an internal (private) IP address.

Check in the control panel that Network type is set to 'Home'. If it's set to 'Public' it will not work.

How did O2 change the security?

Which security mode is now being used (WPA Personal / WPA2 Personal)?

    If WPA2 Personal, which encryption?
