Honda Civic Airbag

Hi

My better half went in to a pot hole a couple of years ago and it set off her drivers seat side airbag.

At the time Honda told her it would cost about £1200 to replace which seemed a very high price, so we left it as it was, all the other airbags are ok.

However, this caused the airbag warning light to be diaplayed on the dash and with the changes to the MOT, I assume this may now be a fail.

The car is an 02 Honda Civic Diesel.

The MOT is due in June so I think she needs to get this sorted sooner rather than later.

I have now thought it may be a cheaper option to replace the whole seat, maybe from a breakers yard, if all the airbags are in place.

I know this may be be as simple nowadays, but does any know if it is possible to pay to have the seat replaced or if there is a cheaper option with a replacement airbag.

Thanks

Martin
Been there, done that, now I want to do it cheaper!!

If the airbag light is on all airbags will be disabled and it will fail the mot. If the seat airbag is a separate pod it can be replaced with some knowledge, but if it has burst through the fabric, a second hand seat will be the better option.

I'm sure you could pay someone to replace the seat but it is literally disconnect the battery, undo any plug connectors and four bolts holding the seat to the floor.

Do you have any neighbours/friends/family who can wield a spanner?

Depending on the car it can be a bit of a mare, on some cars once the airbag ECU triggers an airbag it must be replaced as it can't be reset! So replacing the seat may not put the light out! I'd look in to that by asking on Owners Club forums before you do anything; it may also be the case, that you can just fit a resistor to turn the light out (and conceal the damage to the seat) for an MoT pass; depends on the car and how the airbags work
