DO SOME FORM OF VOLUNTARY WORK AND GET IT YOURSELVES.
My son who is 19yrs went to the Jobcentre last Friday and given a letter to report to the British Heart Foundation. When asked the advisor he told him that he needed experience in Retail so was sending him to do voluntary work in retail. It is for 30hrs a week for 8 weeks.
My son has been on jobseekers for 6 months.
My son said to him that he does casual work for the Royal Mail and sometimes it could be nights. What would happen? The advisor said you will have to work round that and could he not phone them up and ask them for more hours.
My son told him that they will not give him over the 16hrs. The advisor said well just ring them and see. My son did this and has not heard from them since. So, he has lost the casual work.
On Thursday my son said he was going because it was time he said this to one of the so called proper volunteers who was there. The man came over to my son very, very close and said he didnt like his attitude and picked up to phone threatening to report him to the Jobcentre. My son, asked his what he had done wrong and the man said he just didnt like him.
On Friday, he went and spoke to the lady in charge and she said to my son just to ignore him and that he is like that sometimes.
So in one week my son has lost his casual work and been threatened. How sole destroying is this for the young people trying to find work.

its not volunteering, if you're told where to go.. and do a full weeks work?
its #slavelabour, not #workfare!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Its in the word Volunteer. My son was sent by the jobcentre and if he doesnt do 30hrs a week then he will lose his jobseekers.
The man that threatened him is at the British Heart Foundation of his own free will and is not forced.0 -
A lot of these youngsters like my son dont really speak up for themselves and this is were the Jobcentre has got them. The advisors are supposed to be there to guide and advise but, this is lacking.
My son is a quiet and polite lad and this is really effecting him and not in a good way. As a parent you want to protect and guide your young adults in the right way but, this has got me so angry I just keep biting my tongue and taking very deep breaths.0 -
It sounds like your son needs some experience of the working environment so look on the positive side this experience might do him good. As for job centre staff sending people to do work in a normally voluntary roll why should anyone expect to receive benefits when they could be doing something useful?0

If it is casual work, are there not some weeks when he gets no work? If so, this is no evidence for suggesting he has lost his RM work. Did he regularly get 16 hours of work in a week?

Your son needs to speak to the manager & then the head office, if he is being treated badly or threatened in any way.A lot of these youngsters like my son dont really speak up for themselves and this is were the Jobcentre has got them. The advisors are supposed to be there to guide and advise but, this is lacking.

Pretty sure OP has posted this before or something very similar. Prehaps more useful to update the old thread and not start a new one.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0

Theres no place for little Hiltlers in the workplace. People receive benefits whilst doing these schemes because the shops wont pay them a proper wage.
People who have no income, receive benefits so basically they dont starve. What do expect them to do work on these schemes and get no money whatsoever?
Would you work for no income whatsoever..?0 -
Maybe you missed the bit where it said that the job was for a charity done by volunteers? The op's lad has been volunteered so he will I presume still be getting his benefits, the only difference being that he will be working and getting experience for a short while instead of looking for jobs. It will make a change no doubt doing something positive instead of getting disappointed in his job searching. No there is no place for "little Hitlers in the workplace" but it doesn't mean that they don't exist and if the op's son is made aware of this then I'm sure it will be a valuable lesson learned.0
