307 won't start - tries but doesn't 'catch'.

Hi,
Sorry I realise it's difficult to diagnose a car problem over a forum, but if anyone can offer any insight I'd be really grateful.
Started my car today and drove less than 30 feet- it felt sluggish as if I was driving in a low speed in 3rd gear. It juddered to a halt- I tried to restart it a couple of times, it tried to start but wouldn't quite 'catch' if that's the right term for it. After a few times I assume I must have drained the battery (probably 3- 4 attempts) and it wouldn't even try to turn over.
Jumped the battery, but back to stage one, trying to start but not catching. At this point the bonnet was open, and I heard a few loud popping sounds coming from the engine. I stopped trying to start it, but noticed that if the key in the ignition was turned to the first point (alert lights on but not at the turning over stage) a loud humming or whistling sound was coming from the engine.
I've abandoned car and have arranged for a recovery in the morning. Can anyone give me an idea what it might be, and how bad it's likely to be??

I don't know- I've had the car for about 8 months and I think the mileage is around 85k. I had a service and check done on the car within a month of having it (I wanted to do this while it was still under warranty) and I assumed (perhaps wrongly?) that this would flag up anything that would need doing?Don't suffer alone - if you are experiencing Domestic Abuse contact the National Domestic Abuse Helplines
