carers allowance and tax credits

Found out today i am going to get carers allowance does anyone know if this effects your tax credits by much as its taxable income ?
They have backdated it to feb but the man said i am to tell them i got none upto last tax year april 12 as it wasnt actually paid is this correct ? so do i tell them i got it from feb but first payment is april ??
