Has anyone done this before? Where do you begin. I want to stream a live event ideally through my own website (hosted by Hostgator).

You may find that the bandwidth limits imposed by your webhost don't allow for sufficient capacity. Also unless they're set up for streaming the quality may be not what you require.
U-Stream.tv does what you need. It'll work on some mobile phones too but that'll wallop through your data allowance.0 -

I looked at Ustream can you embed the video on your own site? Any ideas of what kind of hardware I'll need?Yellowlawn

Also take a look at live stream - http://www.livestream.com
You can use a webcam but the quality may not be great. Also, you can embed the video on your site.0
