What type of licence does it say you have in your particulars in the paperwork they have sent out/you have downloaded?

    'UK Full with Pass Plus'

Only just seen this. I suppose I am at fault for not checking these details and correcting them before the cover started, even if they were passed on incorrectly I still had a couple of days to notice them.

Damn. Thanks for your help everyone, guess I do need to pay up!

I called up, and they claim that:

    1. I have an automatic-only license and they say I told them I had a full license. I definitely did not do that. I definitely selected 'UK Automatic' license from the drop-down box on the quotes comparison site. Why would I lie?! If the price comparison website didn't pass this information on correctly why should I have to pay for their mistake?

    ...

Because you are responsible for ensuring the details the insurer uses in their proposal is correct.

You have the opportunity to check, and if necessary correct, this prior to accepting the quotation.

When did you pass your test, if it was before you applied for the insurance you had a full UK licence at the time (ie. it's not a provisional). It's the category that is automatic and will be shown on your licence 'B Auto'.

I passed about a year and a half ago so I agree it is a full license in the sense that it's not provisional, but it's not a full license in that I can't drive manuals - I think it should say 'UK Auto with pass plus' in the box that I didn't check carefully enough. :(

Well today must be my lucky day; customer services just got back to me a minute ago and said they've amended the policy and I won't be charged for it! Phew!

I told the absolute truth when I looked for quotes, why would I lie when I know these things will be checked??

    Ahem.........!

.. Why would an insurance company 'routinely' tell all of their customers that a search has shown that their license details are incorrect?

    You now know why!

I don't understand what you mean, but the issue is resolved now so thanks anyway!

A driving licence is only either 'Full' or 'Provisional', the fact that you passed in an automatic car is irrelevant - you have a full UK driving licence, the category you are authorised to drive is 'B Auto'.

Even if you had passed your test in a manual, you would have a full licence - category 'B', but it would not authorise you drive some of the other categories eg. motorcycles, without passing another test.
