Named Driver claims

My son had an accident a year ago on my policy and I wish to purchase and insure a car for him under his own name. Can anyone tell me, even though the previous claim was settled against my name and policy does he have to declare this when trying to source insurance or does he have a 'clean slate' so to speak.
Many thanks
Gerry
