Punch certainly wouldn't be my fist choice particularly for someone without experience of the trade. They offer very little support to tenants and don't have a good reputation.

Do you have any experience working in pubs/licensed trade? Or retail management? Do you have money to invest? (lots of pubs are tenanted which requires you to make an investment to take it on, managed houses don't require you to invest your own cash but it will be hard to get your hands on a manager job without some decent experience)

Have a look in some trade magazines or websites etc and do a lot of reading up on the trade before you consider taking a pub on - it is not an easy job (far from it!) and people who aren't very good often fail and lose a lot.

http://www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/ is a good place to start - and there is a section on the site about pubs that are available.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Pub manager with a salary = good
Pub tenant = not good, though I do know a couple of tenants that make a good living but they are very experienced business people and drove a hard bargain with the pubco.
Pub Freehold = good but only if profitable

Be very careful - when I worked for the Insolvency Service I was dealing with 2-3 pubs going bankrupt each week, and other staff were doing similar. Mainly Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns.

2 of the pubs that were in in the local paper are part of the Enterprise Inns estate, according to the story EI dont help those who run the pubs or they dont offer flexibility, story here.
