I bank with Metro Bank. I needed an account very quickly and they advertise that they will open accounts on the spot. I don't think they do credit checks (I didn't want a cheque book etc, just somewhere to have payments made and transfer cash out)
It's a minor inconvenience to me that they only have "stores" in London (they don't call them branches) but their telephone customer service is amongst the best I've experienced. Their online service isn't fantastic, but it's okay. Also, 18 months in and I haven't yet paid any charges.0
