Jalexa when I spoke with them yesterday she admitted to me that the start figure WAS 5452 and that THEY had adjusted it down to 1053 to make the figures work, here is where my frustration lies. Something is not right. The figures have been worked but why have they had to be worked and who is to say that the amount they have calculated is correct?
My heating is off during the summer. It is on 2 times a day not all day. I have a condensing boiler and a gas hob. Heating is not on at all in 2 rooms and the rooms where it is on are insulated and double glazed.

I will pay if they prove I've used it and not give me estimated twaddle

    Today's reading is 5486.59

Just a small tip there, although the number after the point is not submitted for a meter reading, when taking daily readings with an imperial meter note the number after the point. This is necessary for reasonable daily accuracy because for an imperial meter each unit is 32kWhrs.

Regarding your ongoing issue, I do not know the background to the case but, IMO, 1053 is a credible 2006 start reading and Npower are talking rubbish about the 5452.

I agree about the talking rubbish bit but that's the way it is. Looks like I'm never gonna get to the bottom of the cockup :(

I've been billed for an extra £455.41 which I haven't paid yet and I also cancelled my dd til this was all sorted.

    Extra £455 over what?

Is it a bill or a letter? If a bill, what is the period of the bill and the bill opening and closing readings? What was the bill opening account balance and the closing account balance?

It is not yet clear there is an issue with the most recent bill. Be aware that a possible consequence of unilaterally cancelling the DD is that you will be (unilaterally) transferred to a quarterly billed tariff to be settled in full.

Just remember that taking 2 dates and dividing the difference between 2 readings by the number of days between the 2 dates is only valid where your usage would be consistent through that period.

So for gas, if the dates were both in summer, if they applied the daily average over a longer & other seasonal period, you would be better off. The opposite occurs where the dates were in winter,

Its a standard calculation but without applying seasonal factors, its badly flawed...it only works where the meter for heating in elec is seperate and for gas, it won't work.

The original reading was actually 5254 and not 1053 as they have told me in the letter detailing everything, they've done this to make the numbers work. The reading now is 5484 which would mean in just under 6 years I've used just under 10000 units.
The 'firm' readings they have are as follows:
    11/10/10-4061
    30/3/11-4674
    1/11/11-4984
    18/11/11-5025
    2/12/11-5066
    22/12-5144
    17/1/12-5241

I've had a look at my bills online and the last actual reading was oct 2010-6179 so how has that happened? They only keep them for 2 years online so I can't check further back.
They can't prove I have used this much fuel other than calculating my consumption on firm numbers and I can't prove I didn't use it!

I'm finding your posts confusing I'm afraid (as it appears are others) & am inclined to agree with Jalexa that the 1053 sounds credible whilst 5254 doesn't. However you subsequently seem to say they used the 1053 as if you dispute it was originally reading the 1053 you first quoted to be the case?

Personally I'd forget about what Npower say will make the figures work" and concentrate only on known facts and readings.

First you said the opening read was 1053. Now you / Npower say it was 5254 and yet this Januarys reading was 5241. That doesn't seem to make sense to me, can you / they explain it?

Who read the meter at 1053 and when?

Who read the meter at 5254 and when?

Where do you calculate 10,000 units from?
