External drive issue

My portable Imation 250gb external drive is inaccessible.
When plugged into the usb port Windows tells me that the drive is not formatted and gives me the option to format it. But after formatting I get the message that the could not be formatted.
I have tried both Quick and Normal formatting and also NTFS and exFAT but still getting the same message.
I do not have important data on the drive so not worried about losing it.
Any ideas?
Thanks

If you've already reformatted it then you have lost the data anyway. No free lunch, and no free laptop

If the OP has tried to reformat it several times then I'd agree any data will be lost. However, there are data recovery programs that can recover data from a reformatted drive eg GetDataBack0
