    You could try
    username: admin
    password: 1234

Sometimes they can be set like that but in all likeliness as it's been used, the user before could have created his own username and password.

So, if this is what you have: http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834Gv1.asp then it explains how to reset your router to its default settings (login as well) on this page: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N100651.asp

Basically without being able to access the router setup, you are only left with hard reset options (I would use a paperclip by the way):

"Press the reset button on the back until the test light blinks. This takes about 10 seconds. (To avoid accidental resets, the small button is recessed. Use a pen or paperclip to access it.)
    Release the button.
Wait for the router to reboot.
Log in with the default password.
If the router was not cleared, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting.

    Unplug the router's power.
Press and hold the reset button. While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
Wait for the router to reboot.
Log in with the default password."

My pleasure, I have that model although it's branded slightly differently as it was provided with SKY Broadband so have had some experience configuring the settings, although not had to do a hard reset (yet!)
