    Yes, do exactly that.

On the day before your 26th birthday buy a new railcard.
It will be valid until the day before your next birthday.

    Throw the old one away.

No need. It will still be valid till its expiry date.

(May as well continue to use it in case you lose it - when you can break out the new one instead of having to pay £5 for a replacement)

    thanks all

but problem is when i log on to buy a new railcard it won't let me, saying as i have a railcard in issue, unable to proceed with purchase

it only allows to report if the railcard is lost/stolen, which if i choose this i have to pay a £5 fee and recieve a railcard up until december 2012, which i already have

    any ideas?

Go into a railway station booking office with a completed paper form, a passport sized photo and some money.
Do not mention you already have one, as that may confuse things.

Quentin's idea is a good one. Put the new railcard in a safe place and continue using the old railcard until it expires, so if you lose the old one it it isn't too much of a loss.

Why are you attempting to buy one now?

The whole idea is to buy it (at a station!) the day before your 26th birthday!!
  • My son is hoping to do a very similar thing. He wants to buy a new railcard just before his 26th birthday even though his other railcard will still have 4 months to run. I suggested he go and get one at a rail station as suggested above. Has anyone actually done that while they still have a current railcard, and if so what happened; any problems at all? Plus is it possible to get a 3 yeard railcard in this way too thereby extending the years you can have the young persons discount?

    thanks all!:)

I did. What happened was I got a new railcard!

It was a few years ago now, but I checked at the time and it was explicitly mentioned in the T&C that it was ok.

As stated on the 16-25 railcard website...
    4. What happens if I have my 26th birthday before my Railcard runs out?

You can buy or renew your 1-year 16-25 Railcard up to and including the day before your 26th birthday, and your 3-year Railcard up until the day before your 24th birthday - and keep using it until its expiry date. So, even if you turn 26 while your Railcard is valid, you can still make huge savings.
  • mynameisclare and wealdroam, many thanks indeed. Feel a bit silly that I didn't manage to find the info needed on the official website. so I guess its good news and slightly less good news, but at least he can get the one year card and do what we all like doing here; saving some money!

    thanks again! :T

My brother managed to get a 3 year rail card online when he was 25 I believe. He tried it just out of curiosity to see if it would go through and it did! That was almost 3 years ago now though.

I'll be trying to attempt to get a 3 year rail card when my next one expires, but if not I'll get a one year the day before I turn 26
