I put a bumper in my childs cotbed. They went straight from a moses basket, to a large cotbed at about 4 months, but at about 6 months kept getting their arms trapped in the cot railings, so what I did was to put the bumper the entire length of each side of the cot (along the railings).

I have no idea whether this is not considered ok, but worked for me. I just made sure that the bumper was secured well to the cot rail.

From about 10/12 months (can't remember), I moved the bumpers to each end. I always used sleeping bags for mine until approx 18 months.
    Oh well...

We use single flat sheets for our cot. They get folded in half and the excess tucked well underneath. It's saved us money as we don't need to buy stuff when he moves in to a bed.

We use bumpers too - stops limbs getting stuck through the bars and dummies being lost over the back. When he turned one we started using a quilt too. He snuggles under it, but will kick off blankets.

Different children like different things, so it's difficult to advise you on what to do.
