Car ins - cannot find anyone to give me NCB

Hi everyone.
I am 40 years old. I had full no claims bonus 5 years ago, and then I sold my car, due to not using it, and shared one car with my wife. I therefore have had my name added to my wifes insurance.
Bear in mind that I have never had an accident, I now have the need to buy another car, however I cannot find a company, who will offer me any no claims bonus, because I have let my previous insurance no claims lapse.
I have told them, that surely I have a checkable accident free background by being on my wifes insurance, but still no one will offer no claims.
Can anyone offer any advise.

hi - one company that does give competitive quotes on line for named driver experience is quinn direct (well established irish company who now operate in uk) as they ask specifically if you have a claim free driving record as a named driver.Otherwise try telephoning the AA/Swintons/Budget/Peoples Choice etc as they should give you a worthwhile introductory discount.
