Help - my computer has been wiped off almost all its progams

Good morning

I've turned on my computer and it appears almost all my programs have been wiped off overnight.
Thee only one working is AOL hence me nanaging to come online.
I've looked on my hard drive and the folders are still there but they are not on the start up menu as before.

What can I do?
I mamanged to get the MSN messenger logo on my desk top but when I click it nothing happens.
I do have AVG and a firewall but could this still be a virus?

It could be just your desktop that has disappeared.

If you click on "Start" (bottom left hand corner), do you have an option for "all programs" or "programs" and are they still in there?

Windows periodically asks if you want to remove unused icons from your desktop and this may be the reason why they are not there - do you remember anything like this before you turned off PC last?

Don't know if windows restore will restore this (I just tell it to go away when it asks me) so you may need to create shortcuts, for the progs you use, back to the desktop...

If you can't restore - Hold down the ctrl key, go to the start menu and find the programs you want on your desktop, then still holding the ctrl key click on the program icon and drag to the desktop

Another thing to check - do you have multiple login names, each login has their own desktop. Click on the start button and check the login name at the top
