do car insurance quotes check with a credit reference agency?

not sure if this is in the right forum if not please feel free to move it.

i need car insurance and just phoned up one company and they said they check with a credit reference agengy do they do this when you are just asking for a quote or do they do it when you take out the policy?

i have had about 4 quotes online so will that mean that i ahve had 4 checks on my credit record?

any advice would be usefull

In my experience there are not many that check with credit reference agency simply for a quote. However, the odd one or two do, make sure you read the T&Cs before you submit your details. I seem to recall that Royal and Sun Alliance do (did). The footprint they leave is an identity check more than a credit one, I am not sure if it appears when you actually have a credit check from another finance company.
