Slowing music down

Hi I am looking for a cheap or hopefully free product to slow the speed of music down so I can break it down bar by bar.
The reason being I am learning to play the guitar and the phrases I want to play are too quick for my middle aging ears and grey matter to catch up with. By breaking it down bit by bit I will start to understand the phrase better.
I have a copy of cool edit 2000 but don't seem to be able to record straight from the disc via cd or copy and paste.
Many thanks

Audacity is an excellent program, so seconded on that. After highlighting the whole song or the part of the song you want to slow down, go to effects and choose "Change Tempo" and move the bar to the left - it does not change the pitch which is useful to slow the song but still play to it in your correct tuning. The "Change Speed" function alters pitch so isn't as useful when playing your guitar to the music.0

and if you want to save the files in to mp3 format, you will need the free LAME MP3 encoder0
