Hi
I went to start my laptop up this morning and it has come up with a blue screen. It says that problem detected so won't start windows. It then says to disabled or uninstall antivirus software-which I can't do coz I can't get into windows. Says to run chkdsk but can't as won't go into dos prompt. HELP!!!
This is an Acer Travelmate 4200.
I have everything on this laptop.
Anyone??
Thanks
PP

Try booting into safe mode.
to get to sfae mode, hit F8 while it is loading the BIOS (when you get a black screen with white writing when you first switch it on). It should bring up a menu with various options. One will be boot into safe mode, select that and hit return. From memopry there are three safe mode options, pick the one without networkign for now. One it loads into safe mode you can run virus scans, spyware scans etc. and make sure you haven't got a problem.
If all that is OK you could try doing a system restore. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
I would also suggest that if you are able to get in in safe mode, that you take a backup of everything you can... docs, pictures etc, just in case you can't get in again. If you're lucky, you already have an external drive or thumbdrive... otherwise you may be able to burn a disc depending on whether the DVD drivers load in safe mode

Have you tried pressing F8 at the boot up and selecting "last known good configuration that worked".. This has got me out of a few sticky situations0

Wont let me! Not letting me do any command keys at all.
My friend who works for a well known company is coming to pick it up for me. He's a computer nerd, so he knows what he's doing. Luckily he is in london today or it would have been a trip 70 miles away.
Sorry to bother you all. I was just panicking as I have EVERYTHING on there including all important letters for myself and clients, pictures and most importantly Quicken to keep my finances in order:D
Fingers x'd for me.
Thanks

If you put the Windows cd in the drive and reboot the pc, you'll be able to run chkdsk after selecting the repair option.0 -
What is the best thing to back up on when my computer is working again?
Will those plug in things work ok?
Thanks
