Halifax

Hello
I have been offered a refund from Halifax for my mortgage protection plan. However they are only refunding the mortgage repayment section. Has anyone ever got them to refund the life cover and critical illness cover. They have not given their reason for the refund or in any way said that they were in the wrong.
I know I can go to the FOS but risk the possibility of losing the current refund offered. I have no knowledge of what record or basis Halifax have made their decision on.

  • Life and critical illness cover are very different kinds of insurance from PPI and you would need very specific reasons for complaint about those e.g. if you were sold Life Cover but are single with no dependents. I would take the PPI refund on offer. If you have a genuine reason for complaint about the Life Cover and Critical Illness then you could raise it separately - is there some specific wording in the offer regarding this which could make it difficult? Was this a random out of the blue offer from Halifax or had you lodged a mis-selling complaint with them?

You will find they are only offering the PPI. Not the non PPI parts of the policy.

Did you complain about those parts?
. They have not given their reason for the refund or in any way said that they were in the wrong.

They wont as they are currently auto paying out on PPI. They are not auto paying out on other insurances though.

If you go to the FOS then you run the risk of the goodwill payment being withdrawn. At the moment, Halifax are paying out on the PPI element without even looking at your case. If you go to the FOS they will investigate your complaint more fully and if they find there was nothing wrong then they could withdraw the goodwill offer. It may not happen. It may do. you wont know.

If you want to complain about the life and CI cover then you what would your reasons be? These are much harder to complain about than PPI as most people take them out with a mortgage and with strong justification. Who wants to leave their family in debt if they die? You would be swimming against the tide on that one if that is the basis of your complaint.
