Questions about buying a used car. Can you help please?

Hi

I need to buy a used 6 or 7 seater this weekend as my much loved Citroen Synergie - our only car - is on its very last legs and I need a car for work.

My local garage, who are keeping it breathing till I can change it, have said - don't get a Citroen/Peugeot/Renault or a Fiat. Ford or Vauxhall are ok. German/Japanese are good. They class Seat as German.

Fuel economy is important as it's our only car and I do a fair few miles for work. So I've been looking at MPVs rather than full size people carriers.

I've discounted anything with a second row of 'bench' seats as the ones I've seen have a tiny centre seat.
I've seen the Ford S-Max, which seems lovely as there are 3 proper seats in the second row. In a main dealer, they were about 10K for a 2006 car with 65,000 on the clock.

Am I right to be worried about spending that much money on a car that's done so many miles?

Any comments/ideas are welcome even though I will be reading the advice about how to get a good deal on here.

How often do you need all the seats.

Are there 2 drivers in the family.

2 cars might be a better option if a lot of the miles don't require big car.
  • I have considered two cars, a big one and a little one. We used to have an estate and a fiesta but the estate wasn't quite big enough when we were all going out and we don't like travelling split, (in two cars). We go for family days out and often take a friend or two as well as our three lads. The people carrier is also useful when we go on hols. I do intend to get a smaller car, when we can afford one, for when we don't need the big one, but if we had to have just one, it would need to be a big one. My friend and my sister have both downsized from big people carriers and wished afterwards that they hadn't.
