Car probably written off - what now?

Someone drove into the back of me last week and the garage has told me they expect the insurers to write the car off. This has never happened to me before and I wonder how it works. Do they write me a cheque and tow the car away?

Sadly, I suspect the value of the car won't be very high so I'm now probably having to find a new vehicle in a hurry and find some money to put towards the insurance pay-out. When looking for something new, what is the best compromise to make with mileage vs age? My car is a 52 Skoda Octavia with 123,000 on the clock, I want to get another Octavia if I can and the best I can afford. Is older with low mileage better than newer with high? Or doesn't it work like that?

Thanks for any pointers.

Just look for a similar model on request that the insurance match the value of it (Use autotrader)

From the other insurance they should payout any excess you pay.

Older with less mileage or newer with higher mileage.

    Condition, Condition, CONDITION...

If the owner thinks a service is the yearly MOT run away.. If all the repairs are only done at MOT time again run away.

If minor items have been repaired promptly you know its been looked after.
