Replacement mobile phone battery - how long to charge?

Just bought a replacement battery for my ancient but wonderful Nokia. Am I right in recalling that a lengthy initial charge is required - 12 hours or suchlike..??

Yes charge to full then let it reach zero and charge to full again and this should then run the battery in.

Lithium ion batteries (as used by most modern phones) are generally supplied partly charged. If the charge drops too low, they are liable to explode when recharged (although protection circuitry will prevent that from happening), so it probably won't take too long to charge it up.

If I remember rightly, the old Nickel Cadmium and Nickel Metal Hydride batteries were generally supplied flat (to improve shelf-life), so those types would probably have required an extra-long charge the first time.

Anyway, rather than worrying about it, why not just stick in the charger and remove it when the phone is charged?

Li-ion cells don't suffer from the "memory effect" that plagued Ni-Cd and Ni-MH cells, so this shouldn't be necessary to optimise performance.

If you want to learn more about batteries and how to keep them in optimum condition, have a look at the Battery University website.
