Jobseekers Allowance - when does it go up?

I ask because Iam on JSA and today my fortnightly payment was not in the bank, I rang up and was told that because my money had gone up (or is going up, cant remember exact words) she says it stopped the payment? anyway they called me back and made and instant payment into my bank... thing is it still the lower rate, I had been geting £128.40 every fortnight and thats with about £6-£7 fortnight payment to child support, now the new amount is usuall effective from April, I signed on the 13th which means I should be getting almost full amount or part thereof if it starts 1st April, the new payment of £71 per week would mean I should have gotten somewhere in the region of £135-£136 with the £6-7 taken off, but I got the exact same amount of £128.40

I know its only £7 ...but when your on the dole you need every penny of it!! - Iam at hospital tomorrow and need the bus fares, it would assist me in getting there without leaving me totally skint!

I think because its a direct payment , the lady that called me up to do it just went off my prevous payments and entered the amount manually instead of the system applying the correct amount.

if anyone can tell me what date its affective from I can work out if its worth me calling them back on 0845 number to get the difference...lol... honestly..people who would not bother about £7 when on the dole must have savings, wealthy families or are on the fiddle...hehe

thanks in advance

    Hi Shiloe

thanks for the quick reply :)

doesnt the tax year start in April..?

can you elaborate on when it kicks in at all? I sign on Fridays and signed on 13th - that payment I imagine would be from 31st March -to- 13th April - covering me for first half of the month (with the exception of one day).

    thanks again
  • Tax year begins on 6th of april, not sure how benefits payments are sorted with regards to changes to amounts though

Benefits usually go up the second week in April so if you are paid in arrears it might not take effect until next payment.

By the way if you are on Income Based JSA If you are attending an appointment at hospital if you take proof of your benefit then you can claim back some of the fares you have paid.

    hey Fogartyblue -

    A) didnt realise you knew me personally?
    B) how do you know I dont already give my child money when I see him/her?
    C) a lot of other people on the dole dont even pay CSA !!!
    D) yes Iam on the dole, have a child and thats why I need every penny of it!
    E) how do you know the childs mother is not well off..? do you know she is on benefits too and/or is also desperate for money? - she works and didnt even want it, the CSA now automatically seek it from fathers regardless of circumstances.
    F) where in any of all that did I say "£6 is all my childs worth to me"..?

you have this image of me being someone who does not care about my child and probably thinks I spend no time with the child and does not want to pay any money and thats my only contribution?

I pay child maintenance and give my child money even when Iam on the bloody dole!!! - last thing I need or want is judgemental mothers giving me crap on here as if to imply I dont do enough...!!!!!!!!

    - so get your facts right before you go making brash 'judgemental' statements like that

I would also like to point out (incase anyone else wants to jump in with digs (as this forum is well known for it) that Iam also a sick, poorly individual who suffers with a severe illness which has a barrage of symptoms and Mental Health issues (depression, anxiety & panic attacks) - yet I still work or look for work when I dont have any, and do not claim sick or DLA -> even when im ill Iam still putting in my two pence worth and paying taxes and CSA...!!!

anyway - what is it to you and who are you to judge me?

get a grip and put in some useful helpful comments instead of depressing members with your witty banter - is this how you normally go on with members? Jeesus Christ man , have a little word with yerself...

I am a little surprised that those on the CSA site haven't commented on your post.

You are looking for the increase in your benefit and when it will be paid to you

That bit I can understand. I can also at a pinch just about understand that you can only afford to pay £6/£7 every two weeks towards the maintenance of your child - although think that it is sad that that is all your child is worth to you.

But what does wind me up is this comment of yours -

Would it not cross your mind that maybe, just maybe, the same thought would go through the mind of the mother of your child?

Would you not think that a small increase in your payments, even a couple of pounds, would make a difference instead of making the point that you are finding it hard and need every penny of the increase for yourself?

You know, it's thanks to people such as yourself that feel the need to make such judgemental, presumptious and, frankly, downright rude posts that this forum has gone to **** in the last year.

You know the saying doesn't actually go "if you can't say anything nice, say it, and say it loudly", right?

What a pity there isn't an 'anti-Thanks' button...

    A) didnt realise you knew me personally?
I don't need to - I was only referring to what you posted.
I had been geting £128.40 every fortnight and thats with about £6-£7 fortnight
payment to child support...I know its only £7 ...but when your on the dole you
    need every penny of it!!

    B) how do you know I dont already give my child money when I see him/her?
Is that important? I am only responding to the comments that you made above. As I said, I can probably accept that the £6/£7 you currently pay is all you can afford. But when an extra £7 is in the offering, you did not mention that maybe your child or the mother would like a little more - you clearly point out that YOU need every penny of it!

    C) a lot of other people on the dole dont even pay CSA !!!
Is that relevant to YOUR child?

    D) yes Iam on the dole, have a child and thats why I need every penny of it!
So your priority is yourself first.

    E) how do you know the childs mother is not well off..? do you know she is on benefits too and/or is also desperate for money? - she works and didnt even want it, the CSA now automatically seek it from fathers regardless of circumstances.
Does that really matter? The mother could be a multi millionaire for all that it matters. The fact is that YOU are responsible to maintain your child - not the taxpayers, not her savings - YOU as the childs father.

    F) where in any of all that did I say "£6 is all my childs worth to me"..?
You didn't. But no where in your post is there any sense of responsibility being shown. You say the child's mother already gets £6/£7 every two weeks from you, which is sad in my opinion and doesn't buy very much - but when there is another £7 a week on the table, your immediate response is that 'it is mine - all mine'.

you have this image of me being someone who does not care about my child and probably thinks I spend no time with the child and does not want to pay any money and thats my only contribution?
I can only comment on what you wrote and how you have written your post.

Errr yes - £6/£7 every two weeks.

I am a only a mere taxpayer and someone that would give my last penny for the benefit of my children.
In my eyes, I come right at the bottom of the pecking order - my children and their mother comes first, then the dog (because it relies entirely on human intervention to keep her healthy) then there is me - I get what is left.

Most dad's, like me, see it that way.
