It depends on which part of the UK you live. The rules are different.

Taken from direct gov site you can't get free meals if your getting working tax

Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) that does not exceed £16,190

unless it's just the four weeks run on from a ended working tax claim

That is the position in England but not in other parts of the UK where it can be different.

Thank goodness. I had visions of queues of parents outside the school office demanding free meals for their little blessings!

I cannot believe somtimes the questions asked on here. If I take the argument further, I presume the OP was hoping that every family that had children, with a total family income of under £16,000 a year would be entitled to free school meals irrespective of the fact that they may also be receiving an additional £5,000 a year in Working Tax Credits.

No wonder the country is facing bankruptcy with that hope and intention!
  • I work for children's services in one of the London boroughs, and you can get free school meals if you are on child tax credit only, not working tax credit, and earn under £16,190. However, in another borough I know that they give ALL children free school meals, no matter what the parents earn. They obviously have money to throw away!
  • Thanks to everyone for the info but not fogartyblue.

And council taxpayers that don't care!

If you receive Working Tax credits, HMRC's guidance is that no you don't qualify.

However, as posters have said maybe some councils have allowed it. Usually they ask to see your tax credit award, this is to see if there is WTC on it.
