Simnel cake

  • Mmm interesting links, didn't know that. Doesn't seem right somehow to break lent though?

I made one as it's a tradition for Mothering Sunday. Photo will be along soon (once I've been at it with my blow-torch :p )

Lent is only 40 days if you miss out the Sundays, so cake on Sunday isn't "breaking Lent".

    Hi MrsE

I seriously thought about it , assuming my Mum would like the sentiment. Really glad ididn't go to the trouble as when I told her she screwed her face up .

I'll add your thread to the existing one on Simnel cake later

    Thanks

We have lovely simnel cake for easter, but my Mum (who liked to think she was quite grand) used to say that 'Mother's Day' was a hideous Americanisation of Mothering Sunday which was the one (?) day in the year when servant girls in big houses were allowed to go home and visit their Mums, bearing a cake, so she never wanted any fuss, let alone a cake, as she said that we weren't 'servant girls'. But I always wondered how a young under-housemaid (or whatever she was) might manage to spirit up a cake if she worked in a big house. My daughters sometimes bake me a cake nowadays (tho not a simnel one) and sometimes give me flowers, and always a card - I don't mind which I get as long as I get a cheery smile. We love simnel cake but I think one now and then another one at Easter might be just too much - my recipe (a Gary Rhodes one) is VERY rich.

Hi penelopepenguin, its interesting to see how others observe isnt it? we always saw lent through, sundays included. We also don't keep mothering sunday, preferring to appreciate each other all year around. :) I did get my dinner cooked though, but it was friday as my youngest works the weekend

We always called it Mothering Sunday too. We were bought up to hate the term Mother's day and even more Father's day because they were both (American?) inventions made up purely to make money.
We were given posies in church to give to our Mothers, and we used to bring Mum breakfast in bed and get her flowers and make cards, but she didn't want us buying presents as she hated the commercialisation.
We were told the servant girl story too, but Mum made our Simnel for Easter, (missing out the Judas ball so only 11).

No simnal cake here, although we do have a chocolate cake in the fridge and a raw Leg of Lamb. Oh said he would buy the dinner but I needed to cook it.:) Will be putting the lamb in the oven for dinner as people are out working.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.
