So what? They're self employed. They should have money put aside to cover periods where there is no work. This won't be the first time they've had no work - its just that there is actually a reason other than "nothing to do" this time.0 -
There's still Olympic jobs to be had-I applied ages ago to work security and then decided after the interview not to go on ahead with it (changes at work meant there was some doubt I could be available for their paid training basically they were paying for my SIA). They chased me up last week making it clear there was still a job if I wanted it.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

You really are a bitter old man aren't you.
Yes, kill the Unions and let employers do whatever they want with no retribution........let workers have no rights.
Idiot.
No I'm not at all bitter. Probably because I am older than you are, I have seen for myself, over the past 40 odd years, just what happens when unions have some power.
As one prime example - they destroyed the British motor industry!
Unions are out for what they can get for themselves and their members. No one actually thinks what happens when the employer has to pass on the extra costs - me, you and every single person has to pay the price.
What are you on about - workers have no rights?
Where have you been hiding for the past 15 years or so? They have more rights than they did 40 + years ago.
I have never been a union member, I don't see what good it does.
I negotiated my own rises and discussed work day problems direct with my employer when I was in private practice.
If the employer refused, then I simply looked for another position.
Besides which have you seen what the union barons take for themselves out of the subs paid by the workers?0 -
Found this on the NatWest business website. Obviously not about self employed but interesting if you are employed:
Short-time working and lay off
If your business hours will be curtailed during the Games, you could consider temporarily reducing working hours.
In some cases, employees’ employment contracts might allow you to impose a period of lay off or short-time working due to exceptional circumstances or a shortage of work.
It’s important to remember that in most cases, employees would still be entitled to a minimum daily rate of pay while laid off, and where the lay off is for more than four weeks, employees would be entitled to claim redundancy pay.0 -

I work at an airport and during the 'Ash Cloud Crisis' there was no passengers therefore no work for me. My company said I could either take unpaid leave or use my holidays but they would not pay me otherwise.
I took unpaid leave as my holidays were already allocated for the year. I just had to grin and bear it unfortunately.0 -

What about the when the Arndale in Manchester was blown up by the IRA, did all of the employees that had no shop to work in receive 'benefits'?
What happens when they dig a road up and access to businesses is closed. Do the employees get a 'benefit' payment?
What about the businesses that had to close for security purposes when they held the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, what about those employees?
!
Well if more staff had joined unions in the past 20 years these issues would never have arisen. The idea that you are employed on a day to day basis and can be laid off at the whim of an employer was the norm before the 1960s but has returned due to the complacency of the majority. The bosses of these businesses will still be drawing their fat salaries probably while they are spectators at Olympic events!Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

- Themselves and their members are the same thing.
- Companies are just out for what they can get for themselves and their shareholders. That's how it works. how is that different?
