Pay during the Olympics

  • need i say more .........

I was simply pointing out that there are many ocassions in this country when it is not possible to go to work and hence lose money.

Some are natural situations - snow on the railway lines - cancelled trains etc, to man made ones such as those that I have described.

There is no government policy or benefit that says that you are entitled to any benefits.

There are two basic benefits in this country - those for the unemployed who are actively looking for a job and those that can't work due to illness or disability.

To be honest I can't work out why you would think that there would be a system that compensates people who can't get to work or the employer has had to close down for a week or two.

If such a system existed, at what rate would you think you should be compensated and how would it be policed?

Sorry but no, there is nothing - just think of it as an extra holiday and the chance to watch the Games on the television at home.
  • my friend is in the same boat as he works on the roads and has been told he will be off for at least 2 weeks. its all very well saying just stay at home and put your feet up, but you are being forced to take unpaid leave. that doesn't feed your children or pay a mortgage does it.

No you're not. If you have leave available, you can take it.

I think the OP is saying they're being forced to take leave, unpaid.

Ie they don't have a choice in the matter, if so I'd advise you to speak to your union rep. If you're not a member, or don't have one, I guess the politicians have succeeded in getting rid of them.

but thats the point, they are self employed when they work on the roads, so they dont get any holiday pay. it will be 2 weeks minimum unpaid.

If they're self employed then I really don't think they can do anything but to save up to cover thier outgoings for those 2 weeks.

Can they not claim on any kind of Insurance policy?

Or ask the Olympic Committee to employ them in those two weeks??

Maybe they could get paid for wearing some silly promotional costumes or get work in security? I don't know but if half of London needs to come to a standstill at such an enormous, ridiculous cost and expect those living and working in that area to put up with it to thier detriment, then surely they can provide some work - whatsmore, it could be quite fun (for an hour or 2!!)

And if you haven't? (And may I also add that not being able to work because of weather conditions, terrorism etc does not seem to me to be the same case as not being able to work because of a situation imposed on people because of a government decision.)

But surely they've known for years the Olympics were going to be in London, or do you mean they only got told last week they wouldn't get an income.??

    Are they contractors??
  • they only got told last week for definate that there are no other contracts outside of london for them. they are not allowed any roadworks in london at that time apart from emergencies. no work = no pay.
