Just be aware that if you didn't take out postal insurance, the limit of compensation will be about £48. This is why RM offer a range of services, tracked, insured, etc., as they are more expensive to process, so you only pay for them when you need them.

We organised the return for the seller by his chosen method as instructed and it's still us that takes the hit?

Oh dear. Compensation is £46 maximum only and you have to fill in a form and provide evidence of cost, and then still wait while Royal Mail look into the case. You should have sent it Special Delivery with a higher compensation level.

While I feel sorry for your predicament, it was you who sent the item 2nd class, not the seller. If he said smash it to bits and put it in a jiffy bag for repair, would you have done that? A little common sense should be applied when sending expensive items in the post. With the amount of mail sent, sometimes things do get lost.

You could try calling your sorting office or the delivery sorting office and giving a description of the parcel (size, markings, date sent etc) to see if they can help trace it. It may still turn up.
