Very confused mum

Hi everyone,
Apologies if I haven't posted this in the correct place and thank you to any responses in advance.
I am a full time working mother of a 2 year old and my husband is a stay at home dad.
Today we received our monthly CTC payment of £139 and absolutely no WTC (previously we had been getting a combined payment of £311)
I phoned HMRC and they have told me that I am no longer entitled to WTC as I earn above the new threshold of £17,000 - but I am confused as to how they can just cut this without sending a letter of warning, and I also don't understand why our CTC payments have also reduced - although I assume this is to do with the new government rules?
I already work 40 hours a week and we can't afford childcare, hence why my husband is a stay at home dad, but can anyone advise me if he entitled to anything?
Many thanks.

sadly i dont think he is.
im sure they will claim they had sent you a letter and you must have never recieved it.
they only thing your husband could claim is jsa but that would mean looking for work and i totally understand why you would want one parent at home looking after your child.
i would imagine youll be told that he should go get a job to make up the shortfall that youve lost in 'benefit'
people arent nice on here ;(
you can only do what you can do. and what you choose to do is right for you !
what a fantastic husband you have for being a stay at home dad
i know you would probably get some help in childcare if your husband went to work too but would probably work out very expensive and probably not be worth it in the long run.0 -

This is the 2nd post of yours I have seen today where you tell someone people arent nice on here, you are totaly out of order for telling other posters this, just because you have had replies to a post you have made that you didnt like doenst mean posters on here are not nice.
You could put new people off from posting on here and that is wrong, the lady in this particular case already works 40 hours a week, she doesnt work part time and refuses to try and get more hours just because she doesnt want to.
OP I dont think your Husband will be entitled to anything as if he claimed JSA it would mean he would have to activly be seeking work, and as he looks after your children that wouldnt be the case, I hope you get things sorted because you seem to be doing all you can with working so many hours.not all on benefits are scroungers and don't need to be bullied!0 -
You dont want to work full time because you are looking after your sisters kids for free, (so you stated in your thread) And its got nothing to do with that anyway, its the fact you were worried because you would be losing benefits even though you were going to be living with someone who earns a good wage, people were just telling you that if you were that worried about it you would up your hours, but you went into a hissy fit and are now declaring that eveyone on here is nasty because they wouldnt agree with you.
And maybe people get so upset with you because you are foul mouthed and rude, apoorlykitten I dont care either
OP I am also sorry this has cropped up on your thread and I would like you to judge answers for yourself, you will see that posters are not nasty at all and will give you some good advice.not all on benefits are scroungers and don't need to be bullied!0 -

You will have received notification, the info would be on your award notice, however if you have had no changes for a long time then the last award would probably be from almost a year ago when you did your last renewal - most people either don't check them properly or forget what was on them, and HMRC don't send out reminders.0 -

i had children and ill bring them up !
This is why i dont work more hours. i actually enjoy being a mum and my kids come first.
im surely not wrong in doing so.
why is it what i do offends so many of you ? im a working mum and i work p/t so i can be with my kids.
if you dont like it just dont say anything. nothing you can do to change what i do and i rather enjoy the fact that it infuriates so many of you............
IF i wanted to get a full time job i would but i dont want to so stuff your thoughts where the sun dont shine.
OP im sorry this was written on your thread. chrissew, i dont care
Go and pollute your own thread with your stupid ramblings. Your 9 year old should be at school - you can work then. You lose all sympathy saying "if I wanted to get a full time job I would but I don't want to so stuff your [taxpaying] thoughts where the sun don't shine" (punctuation and capitalisation added). You are plain lazy and any benefits above child-related benefits should be stopped.DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

I think this is getting off topic and not helping the OP who has a genuine question.
OP - the Working Tax Threshold hasn't changed, so if your WTC payments have changed a lot then it is for another reason. The helpline has misled you by saying the 'new' threshold of £17,000, for a couple in your situation it was that amount last year. They should have checked your income figures.
What was your combined income in 2011/12 and 2010/11?
I have answered a couple of questions on here in the last few days with people asking exactly the same question. And it has turned out that their income in 10/11 was much lower than 11/12. Because tax credits are paid on previous year income in many cases, their income rise has caught up with them.

Many thanks for the replies that I have received, I had a feeling that he wouldn't be entitled to anything but just wanted to make sure.
Have a good day all.0 -

apoorlykitten, just to let you know that I have reported you for being abusive towards chrissiew. This was completely unnecessary, as were your comments about other posters, not just on this thread but on at least one other thread as well. MSE asks everyone to be nice to all moneysavers - perhaps you should read the forum rules.
OP, I am sorry for going off topic on your thread, but I believe that it is important to address such situations where necessary. For your own post, as far as I am aware, there is no additional help for you in terms of WTC. However, you might find that your housing benefit and council tax benefit (if you claim them) might increase as a result of your decrease in income. It could be worth contacting your local council to ask.
Also, there is a board called Debtfree Wannabe. You can post a Statement of Affairs (income and outgoings) even if you have no debt. Posters over there can help you to find ways of reducing costs and saving you money.
I hope that this helps, and please don't be put off posting because of some of the comments on your post.0
