Stupid Sayings

There’s enough BS in this world without people coming up with ludicrous sayings that fill one with nausea every time you hear them. Here’s a selection ... can anyone add to the list?

“I’m not as young as I used to be” ... Let’s face it, who is?!?
“There’s no smoke without fire” ... Whoever came up with this one has obviously never seen my wife’s attempts at getting our BBQ going!
Only women bleed” ... I cut myself whilst shaving this morning, and I bled
“It takes one to know one” ... Really?!?
“He who smelt it dealt it” ... Hmmm!!!
“You can’t have your cake and eat it” ... whilst driving home yesterday, I saw a boy stood on the pavement with some cake, and not only did he have it but he was also eating it
“Honesty is the best policy” ... Not convinced by this one. I once broke a ruler at school and decided to come clean. The teacher rewarded my honesty by walloping me with it!

I always thought it should be

"you can't eat your cake and have it"

I hate ( not that they are the same kind of sayings but they get blood boiling):
At the end of the day..yep it's night and your point is ?
Basically ...what, just spit it out
    I swear down......On what ?

    I also hate :
" cheer up it will never happen" Said to me the week I was made redundant and lost my father and mother in law..What more could possibly go wrong.

While I don't hate it I don't understand it - the one about being a 'glass full' sort of person. Does it mean the glass is half full so lots more space to fill with good things or does it mean the glass is half full so very little space for more good things? Someone yesterday described themselves in this way, v confusing!

It's supposed to indicate the difference between someone with an optimistic outlook and someone with a pessimistic outlook.

It assumes a half a glass of something you like a lot.

An optimistic person will say "I've got a glass of something nice and it's half full".

A pessimistic person will say "I've got a glass of something nice but it's half empty".
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

    "It's not rocket science".

There is nothing special about rocket science. In all branches of science mankind has advanced to achieve the best of which it is capable.

Also, there isn't really any such thing as 'rocket science'. It's an amalgam of many different disciplines.

I hate that saying too. I'm more a "glass half empty because I've enjoyed the contents and plan on enjoying the rest" type of person. I think I am an optimistic person except when I am being a pessimist.

But surely the latter implies that there's still half a glass to fill with something else nice therefore optimistic.

Oh dear, I have a desk half full of work to do, had better get to it rather than worry about this sort of stuff - who started it?!!!

Thanks anyway for the explanation Azari.

I agree. As an actual rocket scientist, that saying makes me really annoyed! The science of a rocket couldn't be simpler - Newton's third law of motion - "To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction.". In other words, throw something out of the back of a rocket and the rocket goes forward.

Now if people would compare something difficult to "rocket technology" I would wholeheartedly agree.

Come on, rocket technology isn't brain surgery. ;)
