Charge for William Hill Better without Notice

As thousands of others I placed a bet on the Grand National.

Opened up a willian hill account online and paid via credit card.

I made 3 deposits and have been charged 3 x £2.50 charges by my bank

The bank say it’s William hills fault because they processed it as a “cash transaction”.

William hill customer service say they processed as they normally would, a card payment and don’t have a clue why I’ve been charged.

Who’s in the wrong

p.s. I wasn’t notified of any charges when paying on William hill and connot find anything in my banks T&C’s about this.
I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!

A lot of Credit cards treat gambling as cash advances and charge them as such if you post which credit card it was I'm sure somebody could confirm the details.

William Hill's merchant acquirers have used a 'merchant category code' (MCC) which has enabled your card provider to identify them as a "gambling establishment".

Take this the right way...you are. :)

Did you read the full T&Cs on the William Hill site?

Tell us who the card provider is and we'll point you to the relevant condition.

Just been back on the phone to lloyds and your right, they treat it as a cash advance. Would never have known.

It does not show on the websites copy of the t&c for the card but does on the copy I signed which she is posting out to me (I did ask why it it was on the copy I signed but not displayed on the site's copy and she couldn't say)

Pretty annoyed as I have a feeling it will be burried in 60 pages of small print.

No, but looking on the bright side most people only get caught out by this once!

BTW, you may find you've some residual interest (pennies) on the statement after next...even if you settle this one in full.
  • I still think it's a flipping cheek.

I did point out, I find it highly 2 faced, that if I bob to the co-op and get my milk/bread ect and decide to treat myself to a scrath card I cannot pay for this using my credit card as it's not allowed.

Although they are more than happy to charge me £2.50 per go every time I want to deposit money at an online account?

Defeats the point really doesn't it.

One of the reasons why they treat this as a cash transaction is that otherwise you could credit your William Hill account with say £3000 from your credit card, and then go into a William Hill shop and withdraw the whole balance in cash.

With many credit cards offering cashback/airmiles etc you can see the opportunity for abuse.
