After being made redundant I enjoyed the first couple of weeks, relaxing and taking time to gather my thoughts and arrange my future plans. Once the reality hit it soon became frustrating and boring. I had lost my routine and slept in every morning. Then i started doing some training and getting into a new routine and soon found work, only part time mind.

I found i was losing my confidence at every interview, and you feel you are not able to do what you have done in the past. It doesn't make any sense to have lots of time if you have no money to do anything.

I don't know how some people stay on the dole for years, think i would have gone mad if i was claiming for a week more than i was.

Good luck to the job hunters, you will get there(if you have the intention).

I think the long term unemployed don't know any different, all they know is state hand outs, so you can't miss what you've never had, and how could you get these folk to go work for min wage when they'd get more in handouts? Thats the issue.

The lovely things about being unemployed:
    1) Being able to do all the household chores so that my OH and I can spend quality time together at the weekends.
    2) Being able to run regularly (good for my weight, my general health and wellbeing - and it's FREE!)
    3) Becoming highly organised (because I don't have to squeeze things in when I get home or at the weekends). We now regularly save money because of birthday/meal planning, travel etc.
    4) Having time to catch up with friends (coffee mornings, regular e-mails).
    5) Being able to volunteer and help others.

Yes this is one major advantage for me, I never used to run or exercise because by the time I came home from work or whatever I couldn't be arsed, I am probably fitter now that I've ever been, In fact I did my first 5k run the other week.

I enjoyed the first 3-4 months doing nothing after getting my redundancy pay, but now I'm on the 7th jobless month and I start to get quite stressed thinking about it :( My job area seems dire atm... All the other available jobs seem few and far between and competition is so tough even though pay is so low, less than half of my previous salary... Sorry, not much positive to add in here...

As a graduate who is used to being busy non-stop, I really hated it. I managed to find work until a month ago, and the boredom has kicked in again!! Now I tend to treat my job-search as a 'job' in itself, spending weekdays looking for work, filling out application forms/updating my cv, and learning new skills like graphics design, and taking Spanish lessons. Then on the weekend I don't feel guilty about chilling out because I know I've worked hard during the week!

There is a lot of stigma surrounding unemployment, especially with benefit frauds/ people who don't want to work. I know a lot of graduates who are in the same boat as myself, and sometimes it can really get you down!

It's like they say 'What you do today is important because you're exchanging a day of your life for it' =D
