someone gave me a bale of blankets, sheets, bedding, they were the best present, they weren't even new.

if you are good at sewing I saw something which I'd have liked, a blanket made up of 1st/2nd size baby grows, it was lovely, well made and full of memories and you always remember who bought each one.
  • A second for taggie blankets. I always make them for new babies. My daughters loved them when they were little and now use them a dolly blankets.

If you're more adventurous a smocked dress (or rompers) is a lovely keepsake.

I was given a few gowns very similar to these when my DD was small, http://www.babysleepshop.com/100-cotton-baby-gowns-up-to-10lbs.html

totally loved them, they were so practical compared to baby grows . I think they would be easily made. I handed them down to a friend, and she handed them on, they are still going strong and I think it is the 10th or 11th baby. They can only really be bought in specialist shops, and are quite expensive.

The other suggestion I would say is a good quality thick fleece blanket, personalised for the baby with applique and embroidery, my DD still uses her fleece baby blanket every day and she is 13. She was often car sick when small and the amount of vomit I have washed out of that blanket is nobodies business and it still looks beautiful.

I personally don't like the taggy blankets, they are just too untidy for me.

You could also consider a well designed nappy bag.

There are lots of free patterns and how to blogs on-line or you should join us on the sewing thread which is in Old fashioned money saving for more ideas.

I was given a home made nappy bag, and it was brilliant! Think cross-shaped, ie long strip, two flaps at the side with elasticated pockets, larger pocket at the bottom for couple of nappies and change of clothes. Removable mat poppered to the long strip. Fold flaps in, roll up and fasten, can't remember how!

It was smaller than my 'all-day' nappy bag, which would also take a drink, food, and more nappies / changes of clothes, but it was great for quick trips.

This sounds really random but my friend got a gift card for the cinema for my and my hubby and it honestly was the best present. I was really bad at leaving him but she said to call her when we wanted to use it. We saw and afternoon film on a sunday whilst she watched him. Its only for a couple of hours so can be worked around feeds and we came back and all had a takeaway together. Was a really thoughtful present! And she is now godmother!!!!

I would just like to reiterate to all those suggesting things like cinema gift cards that I would like to sew something, not buy something.
One sensible purchase at a time.

I would either make a small, shawl sized quilt that is very lightweight, or make a larger, heavier quilt that could be used as a wallhanging to start with and as a quilt when baby is older. A lot depends on your sewing ability and experience. If you are able to, go for the bigger size. You could always design it as a patchwork quilt that can have a few rows added in the future as the baby grows.

That sounds lovely. You could then send extra personalised squares for each birthday present!

To be honest, if they had the baby three months ago they have probably got all the things like hooded towels, etc that they need. I would go for something that the child could use perhaps when they're 1 years old, for example a patchwork quilt.
