Service/process-wise, they're no worse or better than other banks IMO. But their interest rates are better than a lot of others. If only for the next year, in many cases....

Still, always worth shopping around for best rates, such as on Moneysupermarket

I've personally not had any problems with them, but sometimes the queues mean I go back into the branch later unless I've made an appointment. Good rates for this year and I have transferred last years over with no problems - actually all sorted in one phonecall and text to verify.

From personal experience I'd say go with them if it is a standard service. Don't invest over the guaranteed limit. For anything complex go elsewhere.

Please also note that after Argentina's success in grabbing Repsol from the Spanish I am writing to the treasury asking them to do the same with Santander and Aena (before Spain goes bust). In a few weeks you could end up being in a UK bank ;)
I believe past performance is a good guide to future performance

As if there was money to buy another bank! We haven't seen a penny back yet from the last lot.

Anyway, as long as you do not have more than £85K in there, your money is save, under the FSCS scheme.
  • I suppose it's like everything, if someone gets bad service they can complain on here, however not many praise companies if they are satisfied.

I am with Santander as a main bank and have never had a problem. Staff at my local bank are brilliant, very helpful with any queries etc. Also I use on-line banking and again I am very impresssed with that, especially the security facilities.

I've had various investment with them, bonds, ISA's which I have opened and transferred at various times and have been very satisfied.

I suppose I've never thought of praising them because everything has gone as it should.

However today I was told of a friend who, after receiving his bank statement, noticed over the last 3 weeks amounts have been taken out up to the total of £1400.
He doesn't bank on-line and his debit card had been used.
guess what the banks response was, after cancelling his card????
    Ring the police!
The police were amazed and told him it was the banks job to sort this out.
So he is not impressed with the Halifax:mad:
Guess after a lifetime of banking there, he's out.

I bank with santander and have never had any problems with them. They are useless in branch as they never know their products, but I just do my own research and make sure I know all the terms and conds.

I have used them over the years for the various different account perks that they have offered and overall been happy with them. I would agree with the comment about branch staff though!

I opened their zero credit card in branch and had to put up with the staff member insisting that I could only transfer 90% of the balance that was on my other card to the new santander card lol! I tried to explain that the 90% limit was with reference to my santander credit limit and nothing to do with the balance on the other card but she just wasn't getting it! In the end I transferred the 90% and then transferred the rest when I got home over the phone.

I have found Santander to be the most inept bank I have ever come across.

I had to take them to the FOS as they made a balls up. Even after the FOS they still didn't resolve the issue.

    I would never recommend them.......................
  • My main objection to Santander is their high-handed attitude towards customers whom they invariably assume to be (a) criminals and (b) always wrong.

My secondary objection to Santander is that they really dont know what they are doing. Ask them the same question 3 times and you will get 3 completely contradictory answers.

What are your concerns and do you haver similar or even different concerns with other banks or building societies.

Pick any bank or society and I'm sure someone on here will have had a bad experience
