Battery query

Just got round to replacing the battery on my Fabia T.D.I., what a rigmarole. Plastic cases to unclip etc., bring back the days of a couple of butterly nuts and a piece of angle, anyway, rant over, I'm just curious to know why it says in the manual that when disconnecting the battery, the ignition must be switched ON ?
I connected a spare battery across the battery leads anyway before I started to be on the safe side just in case but if anyone could throw any light on this I would be obliged.

no
but having swapped batteries on old granadas and the central locking left me ouside and the keys inside i would be wary of leaving keys in ignition unless i left a door open:D0 -

I do exactly the same, though with care obviously.
edit...SB, Fords still lock the doors up to present models when you connect power so carry on with your wise precautions.0 -
Not sure but as an educated guess it'll be so the ECU knows it's being disconnected by someone who's got the keys and is, probably, entitled to be fiddling.0

If it has an alarm, usually it stops it sounding if the ignition is on when you disconnect the main battery.0
