Road Tax renewal naughty

My car tax renewal reminder came through the post late march for 30th April expiry and it clearly states on this 'Don't apply before 5th April 2012. Did so after 5th as instructed and lo and behold I pay an extra fiver than was on reminder - queried why and was told this was price increased by Budget and applied after 2359 hrs on 31st March - sneaky eh ?>

The reminders always say not to renew before the 5th of the month.

I think you'll find that whoever told you "applied after 2359 hrs on 31st March" means that for a tax disc starting after that date and time the post budget price was effective... but even that's wrong.

There was no possibility of you ever getting a tax disc starting on 1st May at the pre-budget price... whenever you bought it.

But its rather a moot point.

I thought you couldn't buy until the 5th of the month that your
previous one expires anyway. So its hardly some mass conspiracy
to get a few quid out of you, and you will have the same problem
every year.. you just happen to only be able to renew after when new
tax rates come in to force..

of course you could cash your new disc in after 11 months and renew a month earlier

This happened to me, but it is only a fiver !!!!!!!

You paid the price that the government set for the date the tax disc started.

Can't expect fairer than that IMO.

I don't think the government is so short of money that they'll offer to "fix your price if you pay now", after all, they can print more money whenever they like

I renewed mine the same night of the budget a few years back, Saved me a couple of £ and arrived OK.

Not sure how many days early it was, Dont think it was as early as the 5th though. 15th maybe?
