possible tax rebate

hi everyone,
i need a bit of advice please.
ive been working at the same place since 1996 to date and im on paye and from then till aprill 2011 my tax code has always been the same, 587T, it got changed in aprill 2011 to 469L as they said i owed them money approx £2000, now that has been paid off its gone back up to 810L, my question is from 1996 to 2011 should my tax code of gone up each year ? allowing me to earn more before paying tax, if so i reckon they owe me money.
also does anyone know how far back they can rebate money if i am correct ?
any advice would be greatly appreciated
thanks
vinny..

    Hi Vinny,

    You can go back 4 years, so that's 2008/09, 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2010/11.

Are you sure you were on the exact same tax code every year? If so it sounds like your employer was not operating PAYE correctly.

If you've not been in receipt of any taxable benefits from your employer during the past 4 years (company car, medical benefit etc.) then your code has most certainly been too low.

I suggest you either send in your P60's for each year to HMRC

    HM Revenue & Customs
    Pay As You Earn
    PO Box 1970
    Liverpool
    L75 1WX

and ask them to assess you for a repayment or alternatively give them a call on 0845 3000 627 and tell them exactly what you said above.

    Good luck!

re the uniform thing - it's called a flat rate expense.

As you're popping to an enquiry centre I suggest you use their phones. They have speed dials which means you'll get straight through to an advisor without the long queue.

they run an appointment system in the enquiry centres so unless you have a pre-booked appointment don't expect to see anyone face to face.

it would be extraordinary if your taxcode was 587T every year since since 1996

Quite extraordinary. Yet - with a personal allowance of £4045 and a married allowance of £1830 ...... in 1997-8 (total £5875) ...... a Code of 587 was possible.

Is this the employee that time and payroll forgot?

    Quite possibly.
It sounds like his P14's have either not been sent to HMRC or there's been some problem with them.

    Vinny,

Is your national insurance number on your most recent P60?

Does it have the correct name/address etc. on there too?

I'm sure they'll come to the bottom of what went wrong and if not, at least it's sorted now and you'll get a refund for the last 4 years plus a backdated flat rate expense claim!:)

    hi,
thankyou all for trying to help me.
i have a lot of old payslips going back to 1996 and few p60's going back to 2003/4, they all have my correct NI number on, the number i recieved when i left school many moons ago and my adresses have always been correct on the p60's my very latest p60 is not available to me untill 30th of aprill 2012, but as all my others have been ok over the years i would imagine this one will be correct too,
also i am not married as mikeyork suggested, i was married but only from 1988 to 1991 but i never declared that as i didnt know anything about tax back in those years

i have also come across this on the net about the letters on the end of tax codes
    T
This suffix is, generally, used for one of two of reasons:
    1. Where HMRC have deemed the number ‘temporary’, possibly because the tax office is unsure of the employee’s / pensioner’s tax affairs
    2. Where the employee / pensioner is in receipt of the age-related Married Couple’s Allowance

The T suffix is there because you would have had a deduction in your tax code in that year. The T meant HMRC would have checked to see if it should be amended the following year rather than being uprated at the same rate as all the normal L codes for that budget increase. It could be that's why yours hasn't changed. Employers don't uprate T codes unless they are advised - you must have fallen off the grid somehow!?

  • If you take company car and fuel benefit off the standard personal allowance you get a tax code of 587T.Do you have a company car or van you can use for personal use and do you get fuel paid for by company?Simple explanation.
