You seem to have an awful lot running at start-up.
Unless you need them, you can get rid of all the Nokia, Adobe, QuickTime, TomTom, iTunes, MusicMatch and Apple items.

That should free up quite a bit.

i'd disable all running processes at startup and only run them when i actually used them. turning from automatic to manual.

question how long does to take to boot your computer.
it should take about 50secs from pressing the power button for a reasonably fast start.
mine for xp was 1min 20sec but was 1min after installing all my common used programs. note a large registry would also cause a slowdown.

to reduce the size of the registry a clean install would be safer than using any registry cleaner.
note: if you reinstall, + all your program mostly used, then create a backup image of said partition. it would only take 10-15min to reinstall, in 6months. reinstall and then update the programs and create a new backup. you'll have a fast computer all year round.

Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig (start, run, msconfig )to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed)

Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

delete the googleupdate task from c:\windows\tasks and disable any google update services using services.msc


Download and install cleanmem http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem (download direct download) - see note in speedup sticky regarding correct exe.

Disable error reporting (but leave notify me when critical errors occur ticked), in control panel, system, advanced error reporting

start, run, services.msc - disable these services UNLESS you use them. (make a note of any services you disable,if you have any problems related to these services subsequently, simply re-enable them)

SSDP Discovery Service
Remote Registry
WebClient
Distributed Link Tracking Client

Also disable these services if you don't use them by running services.msc (or uninstall the underlying software)
O23 - Service: Google Software Updater (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe
O23 - Service: ServiceLayer - Nokia - C:\Program Files\PC Connectivity Solution\ServiceLayer.exe

When you've done all that, reboot, note the commit charge before opening any applications, and post it along with a fresh hijackthis log

Closed, I've already followed all your sticky instructions so do I have to do cleanme etc again? Don't know what prey is so will it be ok to delete it? Have fixed all the hijack entries as you've detailed. Thanks for all you help. Much appreciated.

if you installed cleanmem, you don't need to do it again, but the other things mentioned especially trimming the O4's from startup will give the most benefit.

Also, check prices for a ram upgrade here - www.crucial.com/uk

anything showing in your hijackthis log uses ram and cpu, so if you see anything that you don't need, uninstall it - the lower the commit charge, the faster it will run

uninstall old printer software, you have epson and hp installed?

Sorry to be an idiot but can you tell me how to uninstall prey? Went to control panel, add/remove programs but it wasn't there. My old printer and scanner were HP so is it ok to uninstall anything that begins HP?

Copy/paste the following into the run box:

C:\Prey\platform\windows\Uninstall.exe

Then click OK

it should be fairly obvious which software is related to HP printer/scanners = post the list of installed applications from(ccleaner, tools, save to text file), if you aren't sure.
