Acer backlight

I hope someone can help we have a new laptop and the old one has been switched off for a couple of weeks when we turned it on it is very dark like the lights have gone out can anyone help we are novices at this sort of thing so please be gentle, also my wife tried to plug in her memory stick in the new laptop and it will not read it is it something we are doing wrong

    The dark screen is very likely to be caused by failure of the backlight inverter - these often fail having been turned off for long periods, as the capacitors become leaky and then fail to charge.

    You need to provide more info on the other problem - what OS, and whether the USB devices are showing errors or working normally.
