Structural Engineer Quote

Hi all,
I have seen that a lot of people have asked similar questions, but mine has a twist!
We are planning on taking down a bearing wall (between Kitchen and Dinner) and are looking at getting a structural engineer to do the calculation.
The one recommended by our builder quoted
£350 (bit expensive but OK)
£300 Council fees: This is the twist! what is "Council Fee"?
Now I am not even sure that Building Regulations apply for such a work, but if they do, I wouldn't have thought we needed to pay him, but rather the council, or am I missing something?
Plus this looks way above the odds for a council fee (same as a 2 car dropped curb?)
Thanks for any clarification!!

If you are removing a load bearing wall, then it will require a Building Regulations Approval. That is the 'Council Fee'. Why don't you call the Building Control Dept at you Local Authority and ask them the fee. Some Local Authorities have an On Line Building Regs Fee Calculator so you could find out that way.

Thanks for all the advice. Rang the Council and the building Reg fee is nowhere near the £300.rafraf03
